Freelander update — leading with my head (for once)
Share
A little Freelander update, because I’ve always believed in being honest about the real side of car life.
My Freelander has now failed its MOT, and after going through the list properly, it’s clear that fixing everything would cost far more than the car is actually worth. As much as that stings, I’m trying — for once — to lead with my head rather than my heart.
When I bought it, it had no MOT and no service history, and despite that, it’s been an absolute trooper. I’ve genuinely grown to love this car. The BMW engine used in that era of Freelander is a great engine, and it’s one of the main reasons I don’t see this as the end of the Freelander story — just the end of this chapter. So instead of pouring money into a car that doesn’t make sense on paper, I think the smarter move is to put that money towards something with a long MOT and proper service history — a better starting point for a daily that needs to handle real life.
And yes… I’m sticking with the Freelander. This time, I’m hunting for a Mk1 facelift, but specifically a 3-door hard-top. For me, that’s the coolest shape — compact, purposeful, and quietly brilliant. I’ve always thought it’s a really lovely-looking car, and that’s exactly what I’m aiming for next.
In true HELS fashion, I’ve turned this latest hurdle into an opportunity. I’ve designed a new tee inspired directly by this moment — funding the next sensible car with character. The wording is very deliberate, and the graphic plays on retro road-trip diners and the reality of dailying cars that run… most days.
If you take a close look, you’ll see it says exactly what it needs to say.
The new pieces are live now, tied directly to where I’m at with my car life — and I’ll be updating you on the Freelander search in real time as it unfolds...
